Project Description

Client: Great and Little Shelford CE (A) Primary School

Project: as part of a schedule of planned repairs, this project was to complete rendering repairs to an original part of the school building.

Specialist requirements: the use of traditional building techniques and materials. Works were also carried out during term time. Therefore they had to be completed in a way that was segregated away from the day to day running of the school to avoid any disruption. In terms of planning and scheduling this meant, for example, carefully timing deliveries of materials to fit in around busy times in the school day and to fit in with the school’s overall activities.

Works: We repaired the render using lime mortar, which a is a traditional material often used on period properties. It offers a breathable finish. Sometimes, the introduction of a modern alternative material for a repair on a period property can cause problems with the building’s overall breathability and this sometimes results in future issues with damp. To protect this building’s future, we elected to employ traditional materials and technique to repair the render. In this case, it was in keeping with the original part of the school. As a result, the use of this traditional material and the specialist skills required to apply it was necessary for the overall health and longevity of the building.

Duration: three weeks with two operatives working on site.
